Lamenting the demise of Picnik

Is anyone else absolutely devastated that the awesome photo editing website – Picnik – is closing tomorrow? I feel I discovered it way too late, through the sharing nature of Karen and Lauren. We’ve had such little time together, but in that time we’ve created beauty that has transformed my blog posts for the better.

I don’t want to go back to how things were...stark and unimaginative. So this is a plea to you my friends! Can any of you recommend any similarly awesome sites? Even if they come at a reasonable cost...I’m willing to explore all options. It doesn’t have to be anything too fancy, I’m happy just being able to round off the edges of my photos and create little collages. I’m a simple creature at heart.

Please help...

P.S. This is a pictureless post to illustrate my devastation.

  1. Good call, Marie - I'll be interested to hear what people recommend. Scruffy Badger mentioned Picasa recently as something she's using.

  2. I just read this on a thread: 'www.ipiccy.com and www.picmonkey.com are both getting rave reviews and said to be being driven by ex Picnic staff and affiliates.'

  3. I'm having fun with picmonkey! Collages said to be coming soon.

  4. I AM GOING TO MISS PICNIK. So sad :'(

I was given a few suggestions, although I haven't tried them yet (still holding onto Picnik for dear life lol):
picmonkey.com (supposedly this is created by the same people who made Picnik)
    aviary.com
    befunky.com
    picasa.com
Or download GIMPshop (it's freeeeee!) if you want something more like Photoshop.

  5. Flickr have started using Aviary instead:

I haven't tried it myself, since I have XN View (for simple things like resizing and black & white conversion) and GIMP (for complicated fiddly things) on my computer. They're both free :)

download.com is a good place to look for free software that's pretty trustworthy, it's where I get my anti-virus and firewall from.

  6. Yes, I'd love to know too! I had throught that it was going to basically be transferred to Google Plus but be the same however maybe G+ has just swallowed it up.

  7. For some reason I can't comment on your blog, it always gets rejected and sends me an e-mail with something about yahoo! I'm trying replying to someone else's comment instead.

  8. Many of the elements of Picnik have become a part of Google +. If you have Google+, go into your photos, and click on "Creative Kit." Not everything is there... but alot.

Gimp is GREAT but not as easy to use as Picnik. Picassa also has almost of features that Picnik had... Good luck!

  9. I also really like using GIMP, it takes a little bit to get used to but has a lot more features and it is free which is a plus.

  11. HiyA Marie, yes I've been using Picasa, its got rounded photo possibilities, all sorts of fun effects. Making collages has always been possible too. The only thing I miss is resizing, but I could learn how to do this through my blog capabilities ( I think!)

    1. You can resize photos in Picasa by selecting "Export" along the bottom bar (or File - Export Picture to Folder). You get a pop up window that allows you to resize the photos and save them in a new (or the same) folder. I just learned this myself!
